Kenya’s President Ruto Signals Openness to Dialogue with Protesting Youth
President William Ruto is open to having discussions with the youth who are protesting against the Kenyan finance bill. Young activists on June 23 were determined to halt politicians from addressing church congregations in Nairobi, choosing instead to express their concerns.
In a nationwide demonstration last week, thousands called for the repeal of the bill. Tragically, two protesters lost their lives and around 200 sustained injuries, as noted by human rights groups.
At the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi, approximately twenty young individuals gathered on June 23. Among them, student Kanana Koome read a statement condemning the burdensome taxes.
Meanwhile, in Nyahururu, President Ruto participated in a Sunday service and pledged to converse with the protesters to understand their grievances and collaborate towards national progress.
