Kano State Governor’s Election Upheld by Supreme Court

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State was removed from office by the Appeal Court, but his election has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The court returned 165,000 votes to the governor, following a tribunal ruling that deducted 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total number of votes and declared them invalid.

Yusuf received 1,019,602 votes in the March 18 governorship election, according to the tribunal, defeating Nasiru Gawuna, who received 809,705 votes.

The tribunal’s ruling was upheld by the Court of Appeal in November 2023, stating Yusuf was not qualified to contest the election. The governor sought redress, but the court ruled that the issue of nomination was exclusively the internal affairs of a political party and not justiciable.
