Senegal’s Presidential Election Deadline

Senegal’s fifteen out of twenty candidates for the delayed presidential elections have called for the vote to be held no later than April 2nd, coinciding with the end of President Macky Sall’s term.

The candidates, including Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former Dakar mayor Khalifa Sall, emphasized the importance of adhering to the electoral schedule and maintaining the candidate list.

President Sall’s proposal to postpone the elections was deemed unconstitutional by the country’s highest court. Protests have erupted in Dakar, with demonstrators demanding the release of opposition figures. The Constitutional Council’s ruling against the delay underscores the importance of holding timely and transparent elections to uphold democratic norms in Senegal.
