Controversy as Pastor Blames Mohbad’s Death on His Actions
Pastor Tunde Bakare of Global Citadel Community Church has sparked outrage on X (formerly known as Twitter) with his recent comment on the untimely death of Nigerian musician, Mohbad. The pastor’s statement, made during a sermon in Leicester, UK on September 24, 2023, insinuated that the late singer may have suffered the consequences of his actions while on earth.
According to a post by @instablog9ja on X, Pastor Bakare potentially implied that Mohbad, whose real name is Ilerioluwa Aloba, was associated with evil people during his lifetime. The statement has drawn reactions from the Nigerian online community, with many expressing their displeasure at the pastor’s remarks.
Some X users accused Pastor Bakare of being insensitive and judgmental, highlighting the need for empathy and compassion towards the dead and their families. They also questioned the basis for the pastor’s claims, calling it a sweeping generalization.
Others called out the pastor for using the late musician’s death as a sermon topic, rather than focusing on the message of hope and salvation. Some even accused him of using the tragedy for self-promotion and sensationalism.
On the other hand, some X users defended Pastor Bakare’s statement, stating that he has the right to express his beliefs and opinions. They also argued that the pastor was within his rights to use real-life events to illustrate his message.
This is not the first time a religious leader’s statement has caused controversy and backlash on social media in Nigeria. Similar incidents in the past have led to debates on the role and responsibility of spiritual leaders in the society.
Here are some of the comments:
