Kenya Postpones School Reopening Due to Devastating Floods – Death Toll Rises to 100

Kenya has delayed the reopening of schools by one week due to ongoing flooding from heavy rains. Flood-related deaths in the country have reached 100 since mid-March, with over 100 schools flooded and some suffering structural damage. Originally scheduled for Monday, schools will now reopen on May 6.

The death toll in Kenya stands at 93, expected to increase following a boat incident in Garissa county where 23 people were rescued but several remain missing. Heavy rains have been relentless since mid-March, causing 155 deaths in Tanzania and affecting over 200,000 in Burundi.

Nairobi has recorded the highest number of fatalities in Kenya. The main airport was flooded on Saturday, leading to flight diversions. Across the country, over 200,000 individuals have been impacted, with homes in flood-prone areas submerged and people seeking shelter in schools.
