Shocking: Deadly Clash Over Farmland in Cross River, Benue

Not fewer than 20 people have died in a recent conflict between the Yache-Ijiegu community and Tiv settlers over border disputes.

The proportion of death is higher among women and children. Although the exact number of deaths is unknown, there have reportedly been several gunshots and knife wounds. There are more burning houses on both sides.

The problem started when the Tiv settlers stopped paying royalties to stay in Yache territories, which caused violent conflicts two months ago.

Jacob Uswa and other Tiv chiefs claimed that the Yache youths had persisted in killing their own people with surprise attacks from the bushes.

Augustine Odey, a youth leader in Yache, criticised both state administrations for their lack of action against the recent violence and unrest in the area.

The military-backed Tiv people attacked the Ijiegu community in Benue State from Thursday to Sunday, while the Ijiegu people were going to work on their farms.
