Nigeria’s Asthma Crisis: Soaring Inhaler Costs Spark Health Emergency on Asthma Day

Nigeria is grappling with a health crisis as inhaler costs surge, notably during Asthma Day.

The exit of multinational giants like GSK and inflation have triggered a steep rise in prices, rendering vital medications beyond reach.

Asthma patients are resorting to alternative therapies, like incorporating natural elements such as ginger, garlic, cloves, and lemon.

Asthma, a persistent respiratory ailment impacting millions globally, leads to over 450,000 avoidable deaths yearly.

Nigeria harbors 13 million asthma patients, among the highest in Africa. Public health expert Ejike Orji apprehends that the escalating drug expenses could precipitate a crisis, underscoring the importance of affordable drugs in managing acute attacks.

The brunt of asthma disproportionately affects low-income nations, with more than 80% of fatalities stemming from inadequate awareness, subpar disease control, and restricted healthcare availability.

Orji stresses the necessity for the Nigerian government to boost asthma awareness through enhanced public education and community involvement.

This initiative would foster comprehensive understanding on what to steer clear of, preventive measures, and actions to take during an attack.
