Tragic Discovery: 14 Migrants Found Dead near Tunisia’s Djerba Island”

14 migrants have been discovered deceased near Tunisia’s southern Djerba island, as reported by a public prosecutor in Medenine.

The majority of the deceased were irregular migrants, predominantly hailing from sub-Saharan African nations.

Tunisia and Libya have emerged as crucial starting points for migrants, often originating from other countries, who undertake hazardous journeys across the Mediterranean Sea in pursuit of improved livelihoods in Europe.

In 2023, 2,498 individuals perished or went missing while endeavoring to traverse the central Mediterranean route, marking a 75% surge from the preceding year. Tunisian authorities in Sfax recovered the remains of 22 migrants who had washed ashore over several days, along with seven others off the coast of Gabes.
