Sudanese Refugee Crisis: Escalating Numbers Flee to South Sudan

Since the conflict in Sudan erupted a year ago, more than 500,000 individuals have fled into South Sudan through various border points, with Renk emerging as the primary hub for entry and transit.

The population has surged, with many newcomers arriving in a state of hunger, fatigue, and desperation. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has deeply divided the nation, stemming from clashes between the military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum in April 2023.

Presently, around 20,000 Sudanese refugees have sought refuge in Renk, presenting a significant challenge to humanitarian relief operations.

Moreover, the landlocked nation is grappling with an economic downturn following a reduction in oil exports subsequent to Sudan’s declaration of force majeure on oil shipments passing through the country in March.

Each day, thousands of refugees and returning South Sudanese migrants relocate from Renk to other regions within the country.
